Shortly After High School...

Shortly after high school, I decided to have some fun.
I ventured to South Dakota.
There are lots of sites to see there.

A lot of sites to see

I do remember a lot of site seeing while living in Maine. Pennsylvania has a lot of site seeing places and history. The religion is strong there, and the food is oh so good.

There was an old lady who live in a shoe....Shoe house

The House of 7 Gables

Here's a history question...Why did the author Nathaniel Hawthorne change his last name by 1 letter?

1668 for Capt. John Turner, no relation to Will Turner from Pirates of the Caribbean.

There are 17 rooms in this house. What could a person do with this many rooms?  There is what looks like a wood closet but has a false back. When opened, the back leads to a secret staircase which leads up to the attic. The purpsose was to hide from being burned during the witch trials.

Ok, back to my question... Why did the author Nathaniel Hawthorne change his last name? He didn't want to be scorned by the community due to his ancestor John Hathorne, a judge during the Salem Witch Trials. Nathaniel later added a "w" to make his name "Hawthorne"

Wrote 'The House Seven Gables' in 1851.

2 to 20?

Next on my adventures was a walk through history with Virginia. My grandparents lived there for a brief time. While visiting them my family visited Jamestown. The Jamestown colony was established in 1607. That's right the first America’s first permanent English colony.

The first two English women arrived at Jamestown in 1608.
Men outnumbered women, for most of the 17th century.

Limestone

It has been said that once a military brat always a military brat.
I'm not sure about that but it could be true.
While my father was stationed at Loring AFB
my older sister attended school in Limestone Maine.
Which is know to be the home of Loring AFB
(today it is the Loring Commerce Center).
I couldn't wait to be in Junior High
because there was once week where the students went to pick potatoes.

My sister hated it.

Military Brat Indeed

From 1974 to1976 my dad was stationed at Anderson Air Force Base, Guam. Built in 1944 The 36th Wing provides day-to-day mission support to more than 9,000 military, civilian, dependent and retired personnel and 15 associate units on the base.

What an adventure that was, a lot of history took place at that time:

1975 The movie Jaws was in theater. After it was seen NO One would step foot on the beach for at least 2 weeks.

1975 Operation New Life-With the collapse of South Vietnam, more than 130,000 Southeast Asian refugees were evacuated to the United States. Guam was their first stop. It's amazing how many people can actually be on a C130!

1976- Typhoon Pamela-On May 22, a day after the typhoon struck the island, President Ford declared Guam a major disaster area. In September 1976, the United States Senate passed a bill that included aid for the storm victims. I remember the streets looked like swimming pools and a B52 was literally lifted up, flipped over and laid back down on it's back. That was some storm.
